In this article, we explore the potential of using large language models (LLMs) to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of robotic coaching. We present an empirical study where participants interacted with a robotic coach powered by LLMs, and share our findings on the benefits and challenges of this approach. Additionally, we discuss ethical considerations for using LLMs in robotic coaching to ensure responsible and safe use.

Background

Robotic coaching has gained popularity in recent years due to its potential to improve mental well-being, particularly in individuals with anxiety or depression. However, current robotic coaches often rely on pre-programmed questions and answers, which can be limited in their ability to adapt to individual needs and provide personalized support. LLMs offer a promising solution by enabling robots to generate responses tailored to the user’s input and context.

Methodology

In this study, we recruited 20 participants who interacted with a robotic coach powered by LLMs over a period of four weeks. The robotic coach was designed to provide coaching on stress management and relaxation techniques, and participants were asked to share their experiences and emotions throughout the interaction. We observed the participants’ overall impression of the robotic coach and analyzed the data using statistical methods.

Findings

Our results show that participants generally had a positive experience with the robotic coach powered by LLMs. They reported feeling more relaxed and focused after each session, and many appreciated the personalized nature of the coaching. Additionally, we found that the robotic coach’s responses were adaptive and tailored to the participants’ input, which enhanced the effectiveness of the coaching.

Challenges
