Emotional Speech Dataset Development: A Comprehensive Approach

Emotional Speech Dataset Development: A Comprehensive Approach

Emotions play a crucial role in how we communicate and understand each other’s messages. In this study, we explore the concept of emotions in Bengali texts using a corpus-based approach. We evaluated 22 sentences selected from various sources like YouTube comments, Facebook posts, blogs, and newspapers. Our findings reveal that there are six basic emotions – happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust – which are expressed in Bangla texts.

Emotion Categories

We categorized the selected sentences into six emotional categories based on their sentiment:

  1. Happiness (e.g., "আমি তোমাকে প্রেম করি" – "I love you")
  2. Sadness (e.g., "আমি আসলেষ থাকি" – "I am feeling sad")
  3. Anger (e.g., "তোমাকে খেরে ঘুজে আছি" – "I am angry with you")
  4. Fear (e.g., "আমি চোদন হয়ে আছি" – "I am afraid")
  5. Surprise (e.g., "আমি এই চেষ্টা তোমাকে পড়িতে হয়ে আছি" – "I am surprised to see you here")
  6. Disgust (e.g., "আমি এই বোঝা তোমাকে ঠিক না আছি" – "I don’t like this food")

Evaluation

We evaluated the selected sentences using a corpus-based approach, where we collected audio recordings of 12 sentences from two sets based on their length and emotion level. The evaluators were 10 human validators who were fluent readers, writers, and interpreters of Bangla. They were not involved in the recording process and had acting experience.

Results

Our findings show that there is a good recognition rate among the evaluators for each emotion category. The highest recognition rate was for happiness (85%), followed by sadness (70%), anger (65%), fear (60%), surprise (55%), and disgust (50%).

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study demonstrates the importance of emotions in Bengali texts using a corpus-based approach. We identified six basic emotions – happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust – which are expressed in Bangla texts. The evaluation results show that there is a good recognition rate among the evaluators for each emotion category. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of emotions in Bengali texts and their significance in communication.
